Aromatherapy is a holistic alternative medicine that utilizes essential oils as a mode of treatment. Aromatherapy involves the use of various aromatic substances, which includes essential oils and various other fragrance compounds, for enhancing physical or mental well-being. These scents are inhaled or absorbed through the skin. The essential oils used in aromatherapy are produced by plants through the process of steam or distillation or by dry extract from leaves and stems. Some essential oils are extracted directly from fruits and seeds, while others are obtained from the resin found in leaves and roots. The essential oils for aromatherapy include lavender, jasmine, Eucalyptus, Neroli, geranium, rose, bergamot, cedarwood and sandalwood. The essential oils have been found to be effective in numerous instances when applied to the skin. They are not however, effective in all cases.
